Roswell, NM

 October 4, 2020

Roswell was a 2 1/2 hour drive from White Sands National Park.
The drive took us through Alamogordo and for those that didn't
pay attention in history class, Alamogordo is where the first nuclear
test bomb was detonated. Driving through this small town, everything
is bomb-related. The giant water tower in the center of town is shaped
like a bomb. Farm silos look like Titan missiles coming up out of the
ground. I find it weird that a whole town stakes its claim to fame on
such a horrifying incident.

The climb over the mountain was very scenic. We loved the forest and
driving through the many small towns, each with its own personality.
It was easy to tell when we were getting closer to Roswell as alien
artifacts were popping at the roadside shops and restaurants.

We arrived in Roswell and went in search of alien "things", and there
was no shortage of them! Just about every business had some kind
of alien reference. There was the spaceship-shaped McDonald's and
the giant green alien holding up the Dunkin Donuts sign. There's a
dedicated Alien Apparel Shop and the Alien Museum. It's definitely a
fun little town.

Is it worth the trip out into literally the middle of nowhere? We say
definitely yes! We had a lot of fun there. But don't expect to travel out to
the actual crash site. Everything I've read shows it to be a 75-mile drive into
the desert on a desolate, unimproved road requiring a high-clearance vehicle.
It's located on private property and there is no food or water anywhere or cell
service. (There are several YouTube videos on this if you're interested.)
If you break down, you will be stuck there for a long time as there are no
houses or traffic to help rescue you.

Romin had fun posing for pictures too!

Next trip....Yosemite!

Peace,
