Great Sand Dunes National Park

To be completely honest, we didn't even know this National Park existed until our good friends invited us to join them on an adventure to Colorado. Sand dunes in the Rockies? It kind of goes against everything you thought you knew about sand dunes. Since we are always open to a good road trip, we packed up Romin and headed to Colorado.

This was our first time in Colorado (Mesa Verde was also part of this trip), and the Rocky Mountains did not disappoint. Soaring to 14,000 feet, these snow-capped beauties truly took our breath away. Driving up to the Sand Dunes in this remote area of Colorado, the mountains entice you to come closer.

We rented some sleds in a little town just south of the park and headed up for our day of fun. We're just going to climb up those dunes and then slide right down. That sounds like a lot of fun, right?  Some things not taken into account; (1) our starting elevation was 8,200 feet, and (2) the tallest sand dune is 750 feet.

See that teeny, tiny blue jacket in both pictures? That's me, Lori. No? You'll have to click on the pictures to enlarge them on your screen to see me. That should give you a better perspective on the size of the dunes.

I only made it to the top of the first small dune before my heart said "you better bail now or I will".  So I caught my breath, slid down, and walked back to the car. I put my sled away, took off my shoes and socks, and waded through the Rocky Mountain snowmelt while I waited for everyone else to make it back. Sure it was cold, but not bad. It was shallow so the sand warmed it a bit.

Everyone made it back and we had some lunch where we were stalked by a magpie looking for a treat.

Despite the climbing difficulty, we had a great time, the weather was beautiful, the scenery breathtaking, and the company outstanding. Here's to great friends and future adventures!
