15 minutes north of downtown San Diego and home to Dr. Seuss, is the shining gem of a coast town, La Jolla. We started with a stop at the top of Mount Soledad with its spectacular 360 degree views and beautiful military memorial.
It was early and still cloudy and very hazy so we didn't attempt to shoot the views. We hoped it would burn off quickly, to no avail. Next time.
Remember the old saying "you can't get there from here"? That describes California's road system to a tee. I can't tell you how many times we've had to go in a different direction than what we intended. We headed down the mountain to go over to the shore and looking at the map it seemed to be a simple feat. But wait, what do you mean I can't go that way? or THAT way? Take this turn, go over the highway, flip it around and come back over the highway to get headed in the right direction, and don't forget that last turn up there or you get to do it all over again. A mere 3 miles out of our way to get going where we want to go, all because we couldn't take a left at the bottom of the mountain and which the GPS failed to tell us. Sheesh!!!
But I digress....we finally got to the coastal part of La Jolla and promptly found the seals and sea lions sunning themselves on the rocks in the cove. There was a big old male sea lion swimming back and forth in front of the rocks, barking some kind of orders over and over. Or perhaps he was just letting all the other male sea lions know that these were his ladies and you better stay away!
As our good friend John always says when he goes out shooting with us, something stunning and unexpected always happens. Once it was a bear, another time it was a giant bullfrog, a spectacular monsoon storm on the grasslands and today didn't disappoint us. We found 3 sea gull chicks perched on a ledge. All fluffy and just plain cute, teetering on their too-long legs and way too big feet, we were hoping they weren't going to teeter their way over to the edge of the cliff and fall off! John, this one is for you my friend.
The coast in La Jolla is just gorgeous. I know the science says it's just erosion, but you can't help but wonder if a higher power is at work here sculpting this beauty into the rocks. Either way, I am grateful and thankful for it.
We headed down the road to Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach, another equally spectacular setting.
Unfortunately for us, it wasn't anywhere near sunset, nor was the sky clear, so the shots are not as beautiful as they could be. I guess we'll just have to go back!
A parting shot for our good friend John.....we found your spot!
Until next time....peace.
